Your dog and.....Stay and Recall Command

stayThe stay and recall are an extension of the sit command. A tasty treat is an important incentive in learning new commands. Regular practise is vital to ensure skills are kept fresh in the mind.

THE STAY
Ask your dog to come and then sit. Position yourself so your dog is facing you. Take a step back, as you place your weight is on your back leg, place your arm out in front of you. Place the palm of your hand in front of your dog’s face. Without raising the tone of your voice say “stay”. Make the command in an authoritative and firm voice. With your weight on your back leg, so there is one stride separating you from your dog. If your dog moves towards you, close the gap by moving your weight back onto the front foot. Command your dog to sit on the original spot where you began Repeat the withdrawal movement, stepping back and transferring your weight onto your back leg. Your dog will quickly realise you are not leaving him and remain in his position Praise your dog

THE RECALL

Repeat the above procedure, but this time move two strides away from your dog. If your dog starts to move or fidget, tell him to sit. When you are two strides away and your dog is sitting still, invite him to come to you. Reward with a treat. Mastering the sit and recall is a big step forward for your dog.
