It is a sad fact that in the U.K one in five dogs is now obese. A quarter of dog owners confess to NEVER taking their dog for a walk.
The reason a dog becomes obese is simply because he is eating more calories than he needs. Most owners do not know exactly how much food their pet should be eating. It is a good idea to invest in a measuring cup and check the volume of food for your particular breed. A regular weigh in will also help monitor your pets weight. Consult the weight chart in the CARE section of the website to find your dog’s ideal weight range.
Another myth is neutering and spaying makes pets fat. The metabolism of the animal slows as it ages and its calorie requirements reduce.
Below are a few tips to help reduce your pet’s weight
· Avoid feeding your pet leftovers and unsuitable foods e.g. sweet, ice-cream and chocolate.
· If you feed your dog chews and dog treats, reduce the main meal accordingly.
· Make sure you pet is not helping himself to food belonging to other family pets, such as the cat food.
· Take up agility, flyball or obedience classes. Not only are they fun and great for burning calories, you are likely to make new friends.
· Try gentle jogging with your dog. There are some excellent expandable leads especially for jogging.
· Consider changing to a LITE version of dog food. If your dog is eight years or older, it is a good idea to change to a senior version of dog food.
Remember, you are responsible for your pet’s weight and you control his diet. A happy dog is a fit, healthy dog.
