Pet Care
Your dog and.....Lungworms
Dogs, as well as having insects living in their coat, can have worms living in their stomachs! It sounds awful to have worms in a dog’s stomach, but they are very common and part of owning a dog is the prevention and treatment of worms in order to keep the dog healthy (and us!). There are many different types of worms that live on the contents of the dog’s stomach, with funny names. Effective worming treatment from your veterinary surgery can prevent all of them.
Lungworms
These worms live as adults in the wind pip (trachea) and the many tubes found in the lungs (the bronchi). They are not one of the most common worms and how a dog picks them up is sometimes difficult to tell. If a dog has lung worm then it may lose weight and have a cough that does not go away and gets worse when it runs or goes for a walk. Lungworm is got rid of by special and sometimes difficult treatment that you get from the vet. Dogs kept in large groups such as breeding kennels are more likely to get lungworm than household pet dogs.
