Your dog and.....Identification

In order to keep your dog safe if he or she should go missing from you, and to get him or her back, there are ways of letting whoever may find him/her who owns the dog. If your dog has identification, then he or she has a better chance of being returned should a stranger find them, or they are handed in to a police station or kennels.

Tags are discs that have your address and telephone number on them. These can be obtained from a vet or pet shop and fit on to the collar for the dog to wear all the time. Some people put the name of the dog on the tag too, so that if someone finds him or her, they know what to call them. Other people think that this may encourage a stranger to keep the dog, as the dog will respond to them better if they know his or her name. Identichip or

Microchipping is a painless and safe method of identification for your pet. A small microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) is injected into the dog’s skin (usually on the back of the neck) and stays under the skin for the rest of the dog’s life. On the microchip will be a number that will belong only to you as the owner of the dog. Vets, rescue centres, kennels, police stations and dog wardens all have special scanners that can read the number on the microchip and can trace you as the owner of the dog.
