Pet Care
Your dog and.....Heartworms
Dogs, as well as having insects living in their coat, can have worms living in their stomachs! It sounds awful to have worms in a dog’s stomach, but they are very common and part of owning a dog is the prevention and treatment of worms in order to keep the dog healthy (and us!). There are many different types of worms that live on the contents of the dog’s stomach, with funny names. Effective worming treatment from your veterinary surgery can prevent all of them.
Heartworm
Heartworm is usually not a problem in our country, but can occur in imported dogs (dogs that travel to Britain from other countries with their owners). Heartworm can be found in dogs kept in large groups such as kennels especially quarantine kennels (special kennels that keep dogs for a long time when they come from a different country, in order to make sure they are healthy and not going to pass any illnesses on to other dogs in Britain). Dogs become infected, (the worm is passed on), by a mosquito that does not live in this country.
