Caring for your Labrador Retriever

The Breed

The Labrador retriever makes an ideal family pet. It is gentle, loving and friendly. They are eager to please and easily trained. They are dependable and patient. It is not surprising they are used as assistance dogs. They are one of the most popular breeds in the world. The Labrador originally worked on the Newfoundland coast retrieving the cork floats of fishing nets and bringing them into shore. Fishermen could them pull in their nets full of fish. Today, the Labrador still enjoys playing around in water. Luckily, its short, waterproof coat is perfect for swimming.

Varieties

The breed comes in three colours, yellow, mid brown and black.

Health

Some dogs have problems with hip and elbow arthritis, and some suffer from hereditary cataracts.

Exercise

The Labrador does require a great deal of exercise and is happiest in a rural environment. It also needs plenty of mental stimulation to prevent boredom.

Grooming

Grooming is minimal, with perhaps just a polishing with a chamois leather to bring out a shine to the coat.
