The Breed

The Japanese Akita is the biggest of all Japanese breeds. A male dog can be over three feet at shoulder level. It was bred for pit fighting prior to be also used for hunting. It came close to extinction in the 1930s. The Akita is the national dog of Japan. The Akita is an extremely powerful dog. It is a dog which needs an experienced dog owner to have control over. The breed needs a firm hand. Akitas do have a tendency to get into fight with other dogs more so than most breeds. They can be distant and aloof and can be difficult to train. Care should be taken around strangers and children. They do make wonderful guard dogs as they have a fearless temperament and an imposing presence.

Grooming

The breed comes in a range of different colours including white, black, brindle and fawn. They come in many different patterns. The coat is thick and does moult a couple of times of year. Regular grooming is essential during these periods.
