Caring for your Afghan Hound

The breed

There is no finer sight than a Afghan Hound running at speed. With its beautiful long, silky coat it is a truly elegant breed. The temperament of the Afhand Hound is aloof and stand-offish. The Afghan hound does seem to be aware of his outstanding beauty and has an air of superiority about him! Th Afghan does have an independent, strong willed personality so good obedience training discipline should be started at an early age. The Afghan is thought to date back to the pre-Christian era. Its original name was Tazi, which betrays its link to the similar Tasy breed from Russia. The breed was not seen in Europe until the turn of the 20th century. It was used for hunting wolves, gazelles and foxes in the mountains of Afghanistan . The breed today is a very popular show dog.

Grooming

The Afghan Hound needs to be groomed every day to prevent the long, silky coat becoming matted.

Exercise

The breed is also very athletic and requires vigorous, daily exercise.
